Mineralogical testing of the Madagascan material identifies it as a green-black volcanic rhyolite containing quartz, feldspar, pyroxene, and amphibole minerals. Its dark circular patterns come from mineral growth structures rather than fossilized algae or stromatolites. (Mindat)
It is also sometimes sold under the name Crocodile Jasper because the dark orb-like patterns can resemble reptile eyes.
